I have extensive experience as a photographer covering stories ranging from international events to developments in science, industry and the environment. I've served as photo director for U. S. News & World Report and The Nature Conservancy. My multi-media includes short-form videos and audio for web and live streaming. I've developed visual asset management systems, staff photography manuals and directed the use of photographic content for brand advancement.
2003-2013: THE NATURE CONSERVANCY - As Photo Director I managed photo databases, image acquisition, rights management and reapplication of imagery in support of the Conservancy brand. My responsibility included directing photo staff, creating multi-media presentations, photography of Conservancy sites, programs, staff and projects, and train general staff in photography and photo archiving. .
1997-2003: PHOTOGRAPHY & PHOTO EDITING - Independent photographing corporate annual reports for clients including; Amerada Hess; Squibb, Bowater, International Paper, Alcoa; General Instruments. Completed book assignments including the National Geographic Outdoor Guide to the Great Lakes and photo editing for The National Geographic Atlas of North American Birds.
1987-1997: U. S. News & World Report - Director of Photography managing a 27 person staff including photographers, photo editors, photo-techs, domestic and foreign photo-bureaus, with responsibility for all photography commissioned and obtained for the weekly news-magazine and related special publications.
1973-1987: MAGNUM PHOTOS - Member of the photographer's cooperative MAGNUM Photos covering assignments for publications including; TIME, FORTUNE. DISCOVER, NEWSWEEK, PEOPLE, L'EPRESS and The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY. Covered the fall of Cambodia and South Vietnam, the Watergate scandal and Nixon resignation, presidential elections in 1976, 1980, Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan, 1974 coal miners strike in the U.K., and book projects for The National Geographic Society including The Might Aztecs and the Frontiers of Science.
1969-1973: Staff and contract photographer covering wars in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and East Pakistan (Bangladesh), as well as general interest stories in Asia and the United States. Based in Saigon and Hong Kong for the Black Star Photo Agency, the Associated Press and LIFE Magazine.
1963-1969: Staff photographer covering local and national stories for the Tucson Daily Citizen, Tucson, Arizona; the Houston Chronicle, Houston, Texas and the Topeka Capital-Journal, Topeka, Kansas.
